Retail demand

Retail volumes stayed above year-earlier levels, but annual growth moderated.

The official volume indices are designed to remove price changes, making them more informative about real sales activity than nominal turnover alone.

The pattern

Retail was stronger than trade overall.

In July, the headline for total trade sales volume was -0.6% year on year while retail sales volume was +10.4%. The contrast shows why retail should be read separately from wholesale and motor-vehicle trade.

Why volume matters

During periods of high inflation, nominal sales can increase simply because prices are higher. The official trade sales volume indices adjust turnover using relevant price measures to estimate changes in sales activity at constant prices.
